ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences, Germany

The goal of ZB MED is to offer the best infrastructure possible for the researchers in the Life Sciences. In 2003 ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences was one of the pioneers in library publishing. Since then, researchers have been able to publish via the open access publishing portal “German Medical Science” their articles and meetings open access for moderate prices.

The PUBLISSO-Platform Gold is based on the open source system Drupal to facilitate other institutions similar services. The platform provides the publications with a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). This assure, that the publications are accessible at any time. It also avoids missing links. The publications are listed in several databases like BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), DOAJ, MEDLINE, PubMed Central, LIVIVO, Scopus, etc., to reach the best visibility. Like any digital publication, the references of these texts can be linked directly to the original texts (in case these are electronic publications as well).

Additionally, ZB MED has developed the open access publishing portal PUBLISSO [] with a broad advisory service addressing all issues related to open access as well as research data and digital preservation, the PUBLISSO Open Access Platform Gold for Living Handbooks, journals and meetings (up to be developed) and the PUBLISSO Repository for Life Sciences for texts and research data. The two platforms are connected. In the case of publishing research data related to a text, the research data will be published on the repository (with all metadata), but still in a “private” mode. Therefore the data will be accessible for the peer review process. Upon publication of the article, the research data will be published as well, both with an own DOI and there will be a reference to the text, and vice versa. It is also possible to embed videos and other material; we therefore consider this as “enhanced publications”.

Results and Discussion

Any format can be published by PUBLISSO: from the classic (electronic) book to any media format of the future. The researchers do not have to think about journals or formats, it´s also possible to publish single research data. Statistics and alternative metrics will provide information about usage and the implementation of social media features can help to distribute the research findings. The poster will show how a scientific library in the Life Sciences’ domain can offer new services for their researchers to provide access to scientific information.
